In her debut novel Eileen Snow introduces readers to a loveable cast of characters and invites them to experience a Christmas miracle that will inspire them to reach out to those who hurt. As the back cover synopsis so eloquently guarantees, “Hannah’s Reach will reach your heart.” It will also leave readers anxious for the next work from this exciting new author.
Hannah’s Reach tells the coming-to-faith story of Olivia Thomas, a toy executive with an overflowing bank account and an empty heart. Olivia’s troubled childhood leads her to build a successful but isolated life. However, the love of a doorman from Idaho, a group of needy children and an ever-present Heavenly Father sways the soul of the hardened executive as Olivia encounters yet another gut-wrenching season of life.
Readers longing for a heartwarming Christmas story full of hope, faith and miracles will fall in love with Hannah’s Reach. It swells with warm, fuzzy emotion and idyllic scenes. The reality-addicted reader, however, may be somewhat uncomfortable with certain aspects of the plot, including the inevitable happy ending for all.
The plot takes several twists and turns, bridging past and present in a way that can be confusing if the reader doesn’t give full attention to the book. Snow cleverly conceals the grand finale, while at the same time offering subtle hints which readers will recall with a sigh of realization after turning the final page.
Hannah’s Reach is a faith-based book that will speak encouragement to the hearts of those who find themselves in a season of doubt. God’s eternal presence in the lives of all His children, young or old, can be seen on every page.
Most of Snow’s characters will find permanent places within the hearts of readers, especially those who work with at-risk children. Livy, Brian and the children who touch their lives take center stage and shine as characters. Readers will find themselves shedding tears on their behalf and rooting for them as they face challenges and trying times.
As in every good story centering on the battle between good and evil, a devious villain lurks within the pages. Although he is a detestable creature, his personality, motives and actions are well-developed and consistent throughout the book.
The supporting characters are the cement that holds the book together. From the executives at Joy’s Toys to the surreal Kimball family, they make and break the main characters and provide clarity in the story, as well as offering their own brand of inspiration.
Hannah’s Reach is recommended for anyone who loves kids. Parents, teachers and church children’s workers alike will find themselves caught up in Hannah’s world. Social Service workers will also benefit from delving into the story. Although the social service field is not portrayed in a positive light, it is honestly presented, and those within the system can learn much from this book. Finally, Hannah’s Reach is highly recommended for foster parents or for those who are considering service in this capacity. Again, much can be learned from the characters’ experiences in foster care, and the education is delivered with a much-needed dose of inspiration and encouragement.
Hannah’s Reach can be ordered through most chain bookstores or at the Hannah’s Reach website, which also contains valuable resources for those who love and work with children.
