The Life O'Reilly by Brian Cohen – Book ReviewHigh Drama Unfolds In This Mesmerizing Tale
The Life O'Reilly, a Novel, is the story of Nick O'Reilly, a partner in a fancy New York law firm who discovers he wants more out of life.
Nick O’Reilly is a financial security attorney. He works with major companies and millions of dollars. He lives in a fancy apartment across the street from Central Park and has a wardrobe of the finest suits. Now, at age 36, Nick is realizing there is more to life than making millions of dollars and living the high life. To get better publicity, his law firm decides to take on pro bono cases, and Nick is assigned the first one of these cases. His job is to represent a battered woman and help her free herself from her abusive husband so she and her son can start a new life. Attorney/Client RelationsWhen Nick meets Dawn and her young son Jordan he is impressed with both of them. She sparks something deep within him, and as they work closely over time to prepare for her case, their relationship deepens into more than friendship. But there are rules when it comes to attorneys and clients, and Nick is a professional. The case is going fairly well, however the higher ups in the law firm chastise him for spending too much time on the case. They say their paying clients come first, even though they assigned the pro bono case to Nick with the intention of getting good publicity for the firm. While Nick juggles a big financial case and the divorce/custody case involving Dawn and Jordan, he begins to see which one is more important. For the first time he feels that he can really make a difference in someone’s life. He feels better about working on Dawn’s case than about working on his big business case. This is an eye-opener for Nick O’Reilly. As time goes by, Nick and Dawn’s relationship threatens to disrupt the case. Tragedy StrikesNick finally begins to put his life on a track that he feels is worthwhile. Then tragedy strikes. Readers should have a box of Kleenex handy when they read this book. It is emotional, to say the least. The author, Brian Cohen, is a practicing attorney in New York and brings authenticity to Nick’s profession. While there might at times be too much emphasis on the legal terms, this is definitely not a legal story. It is a heartwarming tale of discovering life, love, and legacy. By reassessing his life, Nick O’Reilly discovers that he doesn’t need the fancy law firm and the high powered suits. For the first time in a long time, Nick sees life as exciting and challenging. The Life O’Reilly is a love story filled with drama and emotions. There are plenty of shocking events which make this a page-turner and a very sentimental novel.
