Wish Lists: Gauche or Perfect?

I want the world, I want the whole world

Since the holidays are fast approaching I thought I'd talk about wish lists.

Since the holidays are fast approaching (or if you believe the hype of the retailers "Buy now! You'll miss the holidays if you don't! Hurry!") I thought I'd talk about wish lists.

I find the wish list to be an invaluable tool. If I didn't use a wish list, I'd get nothing but knick knacks and no books at all, and we wouldn't want that, now would we? I much prefer to give people what they really want for presents, and not what I want. I hope other people feel the same. So, I publish my wish lists in hopes of getting books. Lots and lots of books. Or coffee (aka "writer's fuel").

I try and make it humorous, as some people are against the practice. On my personal blog I called the wish list page "I want an Oompa Loompa Daddy!", modeled after the infamous Veruca Salt. Oddly, some people don't get the reference. I guess I just assumed that much like It's a Wonderful Life and other classics there was no escaping the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka.

What's your feeling on wish lists? Do you find them gauche affronts to your sense of decorum? Do you find them essential? Do you walk a fine line somewhere in between? Discuss. Rant. Let us know what you think.
